American Social Media Personality Penalized After Mass Electric Bike Gathering on Iconic Australian Bridge
New South Wales police have issued a fine against an American social media personality and served two traffic infringement notices for reported reckless operation following a large group of electric bicycle users gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the busy commute on a weekday.
The Incident: A Prohibited Ride
A gathering of approximately 40 individuals riding e-bikes and motorcycles proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, where cycling is prohibited. The riders subsequently reversed direction and rode through the downtown area and a nearby district.
"This had potential for serious injury or fatalities," remarked a senior police official the officer on the following day.
Police said they did not immediately pursue the riders out of concerns for public safety but rather found the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, where they dispersed.
Penalties Issued for Content Creator
Later in the week, authorities announced they had issued the American online personality who goes by the influencer, twenty-six, with two traffic infringement notices for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), with a penalty of over five hundred dollars and three demerit points each, in relation to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that inquiries were continuing.
The personality reportedly has more than 3.4 million followers on YouTube and over 1.2m on Instagram.
Creator's Response
The online figure spoke with a major newspaper recently following the event spread rapidly on digital platforms, saying he regretted giving "bike life" a bad reputation.
"I accept the blame. It was one of the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I am a visitor here, and I intend to come here respecting the laws and norms of Sydney. When I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to greet people near the bridge."
"I did not know the area well, it was my fault we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: either the group rides the full length of the bridge and turns around, which is a crime. Or we reverse, basically, before entering the bridge. I chose at the time to turn around."
National Debate on Electric Bike Rules
The spate of e-bikes on streets across the country has prompted growing calls for regulation. A senior government official, the minister, recently said that illegal ebikes were a "complete hazard on the road."
"Kids have done stupid things on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are coming into our hospital emergency departments are absolutely devastating," he said. "We’ve got to ensure we stop these things entering the country [and] police are given the powers to crack down, to take them away, to crush them, to dispose of them."
The state reported over two hundred injuries associated with electric bikes in the previous year. But, in the initial half of the following year, that figure jumped to 233 injuries plus four fatalities.
