A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
