“This result is significant because it demonstrates, for the first instance, that a particular group of polar bears in the hottest part of Greenland are employing ‘jumping genes’ to quickly modify their own DNA, which could be a desperate survival mechanism against melting sea ice,” added Godden.

Temperatures in the northern area are colder and more stable, while in the warmer region there is a more temperate and more open water area, with significant weather swings.

Genetic code in organisms mutate over time, but this mechanism can be sped up by climate pressure such as a changing planet.

Nutritional Changes and Key Genomic Regions

Scientists observed some intriguing DNA alterations, such as in regions connected to lipid metabolism, that could assist polar bears survive when food is scarce. Animals in temperate zones had increased rough, plant-based food intake versus the lipid-rich, marine nutrition of northern bears, and the DNA of these specific animals seemed to be evolving to this shift.

Godden elaborated: “We identified several active DNA areas where these mobile elements were particularly busy, with some located in the protein-coding regions of the DNA, implying that the bears are experiencing swift, significant DNA modifications as they adjust to their vanishing sea ice habitat.”

Next Steps and Protection Efforts

The next step will be to study different Arctic bear groups, of which there are numerous worldwide, to see if similar genetic shifts are taking place to their DNA.

This study may assist safeguard the animals from dying out. However, the experts stressed that it was essential to slow temperature rises from increasing by cutting the consumption of fossil fuels.

“Caution is still required, this offers some hope but does not mean that polar bears are at any diminished threat of disappearance. We still need to be undertaking every action we can to lower pollution and slow global warming,” summarized Godden.
