Kalimuendo Fires as Forest Secure Nostalgic Win Over Malmö
“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” was chanted through the City Ground as Forest fans celebrated a further success against their Swedish opponents. Much has occurred since Francis's decisive header secured the European Cup in 1979, but the club continue to hold dear those memories. Similarly, major shifts have occurred in the five weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team appearing reinvigorated and earning a comfortable win thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of progressing in the European competition.
Gaining Steam with Another Consecutive Victory
For Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had not played for almost three weeks after finishing sixth in their domestic league – represented a third straight triumph across every tournament and further built on the positive energy gained from the previous week's stunning victory at Anfield. While this match was a re-run of Forest’s historic triumph in name, the game itself was devoid of any real jeopardy or jitters.
This was an occasion filled with nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third clash between the teams since the showpiece event over four decades past.
The home side fully embraced the history, honoring the legends of that era by giving them, along with their Malmö opponents, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Malmö's squad from that time were additionally in attendance. Both teams enjoyed a meal together before the match. Forest legends and their teammates received a rousing welcome when they assembled on the field a quarter of an hour before the start, and a characteristically superb display was unveiled in the home stand.
Remembering History
“30th May 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” read one part of a giant tifo, in block capitals. While nobody needed reminding of what happened next, the rest was unfurled as the players emerged from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. A second brilliant tifo showed Brian Clough observing events beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.
Dominance from the Start
So, Forest had drunk in those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the evening? It was impressive, as well. They were in complete control from the moment the forward fired an effort off target inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 lead by the half-time interval. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.
It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who came to the club as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the Malmö defense led by their own academy product skipper, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic saw a cross cannon off a opponent and into the pathway of the midfielder, who swept home with his right foot from just inside the penalty area to score his maiden strike since March.
Second Strike Confirms Control
Yates was implicated in the team's next goal on the verge of half-time, as well, his free header saved by Malmö’s shot-stopper Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to tap in the rebound from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder given a rare start and just his second outing since September, was the spark, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the far post.
Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s driven shot was deflected aside off the defender Rösler, son of former Manchester City striker Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked the defender had earlier had a powerful header instinctively saved by the keeper, who returned in place of the former Aston Villa goalie Robin Olsen.
Opponent's Struggles
This was the Swedish side's first match since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on November 9th, and they struggled to match Forest’s energy. The Reds extended the lead to three when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo headed back a set-piece. The captain had a volley stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic pounced on the leftovers.
Forest then went for the jugular, with the winger dinking a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an ambitious shot off target from distance. It was that kind of nights. Dyche, mindful of Sunday’s league game here against Brighton, implemented seven changes from the side that stunned the Reds at Anfield recently, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced substitutes and Igor Jesus during the second half.
Smooth Night for Forest
It turned out to be a hiccup-free night for Nottingham Forest. The coach could withdraw Murillo with the match long since boxed off and subsequently introduced teenage full-back Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. Dyche discussed the Forest old guard providing “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, almost five decades on, the present squad showed they are able of a few nuggets of excitement, as well.
