No less than 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
At least 64 civilians died in a security raid against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's past.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives reported. Over 80 suspects were arrested.
Intense confrontations broke out when approximately 2,500 security personnel entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.
The International human rights organization expressed being "appalled" by the police operation, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Raid Aftermath
The slum neighborhoods close to the city's international airport is seen as the central command of a major criminal organizations.
Government representatives stated a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Resident Accounts
Locals have likened the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Criminal Expansion
The Red Command group has been increasing their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.
Security forces said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the mission, in addition to dozens of firearms.

Numerous alleged criminals are considered affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the city.
