The Lingering Trauma After a Devastating Hurricane: A Path of Emotional Devastation Across Jamaica.

When the devastating cyclone ravaged Jamaica on 28 October with ferocious 185mph gusts, it resulted in a picture of catastrophic damage. Dwellings, hospitals, and key utilities were severely compromised, resulting in 32 deaths and impacting an estimated 1.5 million people. For therapist Toni-Jan Ifill, it was obvious from the start that the material damage would be paired with profound and enduring psychological scars.

“Simple occurrences can activate them,” Ifill explains. “A patient mentioned a cart we often push through the corridors, whose clatter reminded her of cracking branches and the fierce gales. She now refuses to listening to that sound.”

A month and a half after the catastrophe, which also struck neighboring Cuba, recollections of the terrifying winds continue to haunt many staff at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston. The mere sound of falling rain can now cause panic among survivors.

The Hidden Toll Beyond Financial Losses

Hurricane Melissa resulted in a substantial recovery package totaling billions of dollars over several years and an further disbursement of $150 million from a groundbreaking catastrophe bond. Yet, experts warn this economic assistance does not address the unseen cost: widespread trauma—particularly among those previously affected from another major storm in 2024.

While most attention centers on physical reconstruction, research over the past three years indicate that the risk of PTSD grows substantially after major storms and displacement. Experts are now calling for the integration of mental health support into climate-disaster policy across small island developing states.

Layered Struggles: Displacement and Emotional Stability

Scholars stress how long-term dislocation, destroyed jobs, and poor access to care amplify psychological vulnerabilities. A scholarly article warned of a heightened danger of anxiety, depression, and PTSD after extreme weather. Additional analysis found comparable fear, anxiety, and distress among people affected by tropical cyclones.

Dr. Eamin Heanoy, a expert who has studied disaster survivors worldwide, notes that survivors could face several key mental health challenges: anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

Dr. Rose-Ann Smith, a scholar in geography and disaster risk management, concurs. She points out that while individuals can be strong, as the climate crisis worsens, psychological well-being is becoming an ever more critical issue—although comprehensive data is still lacking.

Both Smith and Heanoy found that women showed more severe emotional impact than male counterparts. “It indicates that women are more susceptible than males in such catastrophes,” Smith explains.

The Uncertain Path to Psychological Repair

Dr. Heanoy says that while some early progress in psychological state may occur within a twelve-month period, long-term outcomes are still unclear. The extent to which survivors heal is largely determined by the circumstances of their suffering and the care they receive.

The experts see that the loss of homes and possessions can magnify the psychological burden to start over. Smith describes housing loss “a major source of stress,” especially when insurance or savings are lacking. “Reconstruction comes with its own emotional tax,” she adds.

Ifill witnesses the identical trend among her patients: “People who had mental health conditions before have found it’s much more severe in this aftermath.”

Apart from the psychological impact, physical problems remain. The hurricane severely damaged critical water infrastructure, hampering the full return of clean water. Insurance payouts, while helpful, cannot resolve the systemic weaknesses exposed by the storm.

Grassroots Support as a Vital Pillar

Critically is that physical reconstruction by itself does not address the psychological injuries caused by permanent disabilities. Expert analysis indicates that survivors often find social networks to be more responsive than official aid.

“Official action is important,” Smith says. “When it is lacking, or when it is inefficient, communities keep each other whole.”

Ifill similarly praises the value of mutual support in coping with disaster. She says she was “impressed by the resilient spirit” among strong communities. “Your house is gone, right? But if a community has a supportive culture, they make jokes about the storm.”

Ifill also praises efforts to support mental health awareness after the disaster but warns about the negative effects of constant exposure to traumatic media. “The guidance included reducing screen time, following official updates, and leveraging technology to stay in touch with loved ones.”

An Increasing International Focus

Over the past decade, mental health has received more focus from global organizations due to the intensifying climate crisis. The increasing frequency of extreme weather has led to the development of frameworks for mental health response.

Major health organizations have released practical guides to help aid personnel in providing psychosocial support in the immediate period of disasters. These initiatives aim to build individual and social resilience by training professionals, combating stigma, and facilitating the use of mental health services.

Monetary aid are also underlined as fundamental for protecting psychological recovery. A agricultural worker from another Caribbean nation, who lost everything in a previous flood, emphasizes the hopelessness that arises when promised compensation is not delivered. “They came... But even now, we did not receive the promised help,” he says.

A Call for Holistic Healing

Experts argue that the Caribbean region is responsible for a minuscule fraction of worldwide greenhouse gases yet endures extreme climate impacts. A swift, well-funded recovery is deemed critical to avoid enduring trauma.
