Thomas Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Star Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.
One snub was enough. A second one and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, who is far too wily not to realize that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require contributions by Jude Bellingham, even if it is also up to the player to adapt to the game plans and player rankings necessary with the national team now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is about harnessing it appropriately. Skill counts but England know from bitter experience that there is consequences when stardom prevails. Still, a message has been sent.
Bellingham had much to ponder after his omission of the recent team selection. He observed England book their place at the upcoming World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach talk about appreciating the team's dynamism and principles. Naturally, he has responded in champion style, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid against their rivals and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have put his tournament chances precarious.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder directed towards intimidating opponents rather than teammates. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is little benefit to creating tension with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time not playing has shown him that representing the national team is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after proving that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem with the character,” the German stated. “Jude just has that aggression. You need a certain edge to succeed at the top that he reached. We all need to support him and establish a setting which he can [have] that intensity in matches and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s final group games versus one opponent and Albania. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted No 10 who needs support and direction. Foden has been absent for the national team since spring and has struggled to hit the heights recently but Tuchel had to consider the player after his performance in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The issue, however, is the best way to deploy the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to pick Cole Palmer once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Is selecting multiple creators to the World Cup be excessive? The previous manager failed to discover the optimal mix at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, restricting the captain's game in the process.
It seems unlikely the current manager doing similar if it disrupts the team harmony. Space exists for one No 10, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clear roles helps. He is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who must play through the middle. The coach wants him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists on your best position, can you play left wing? Can you play right wing?” he said. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I've long had this vision regarding him for a long time. In my view it suits him best.”
Tuchel conceded there are occasions when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's his role, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also so used to playing for Man City in a specific system, to have a defined role. Believe he benefits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? Where exactly should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defend?
The manager discussed one star making runs for tap-ins and Foden scoring goals from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. A new face is recognized for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Interest is high.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, he suggested deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against one opponent or Albania. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are other options if he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting the captain to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the duo linked up for a goal. The coach will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where at some point it falls to the duty of the players,” he said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to start against the upcoming opponents. Tuchel wants him committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside the ego outside. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an superior one.
