Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
